Thoughts

Hmm...well David Blunkett has finally resigned. There are only so many times that you can ignore the ministerial code of conduct. Oh well.

Well, Halloween went off fairly quietly....only had one trick or treat. Didn't get the dog wound up at all.

Fireworks...now this annoys me intensely. They should be for the 5th November. It shouldn't be from about a month before through until probably mid-January. That doesn't include the random attacks made with fireworks, including
this, perhaps even this, but definitely this, and this.

It is about time that fireworks were not sold to the general public.

On a final thought....Eid Mubarak

You can have my fireworks when you pry them from my cold dead fingers. Fireworks don't kill. Jackasses who abuse the use of them kill!!

You can't rail against no smoking laws and then want to ban fireworks. Twisted ideology from my perspective. Ban smoking and keep the fireworks! Now where did I leave my lit cigar??????

I think I'm with Cerebalwaste here.

I disagree with banning most things, including smoking, drinking, firearms and fireworks.

Let the general public have fun IF they don't hurt or inconvenience others. The examples you give seem to be perpetrated by mindless vandels and probably wouldn't occur in a society where a sound slap can be applied. At least one of the cases leads me to think those responsible should be consigned to a mental instituition indefinately.

I hadn't mentioned the injuries that happen every year because people mishandle fireworks.

I do believe it is about time to ban, or even restrict their availability, unless there is a major effort to teach people to handle them safely.

Then all we have to do is find the morons.

Firearms? I don't want to jump on this one point which is a little off topic, but... Chris, how can one have fun with firearms safely? Firearms are designed to be downright unpleasant, whereas fireworks are essentially just entertainment- they weren't designed to hurt, its gross negligence/ idiocy that leads to this.

Firearms are fun to some people. If they aren't your cup of tea than that is fine too.

History has shown that the more governments try to ban various item and behaviors the more society (in general) will rebel against the system. Fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts yet widely available and USED around the 4th of July. A national holiday. Another example Camera Phone and Barbie Dolls in Saudi and BOOZE. All are available and the first two traded openly.

What is acceptable is regulating USE of such products in specific areas. Fireworks and Firearms don't need to be used in the inner city but what problem are they causing on my 40 acres outside of the city? If you want to protect people from themselves you better ban the AUTOMOBILE. Ted Kennedy's car has killed more people than my illegal firework stash and my guns! Now would someone please hand me my 12 shot Roman Candle, my car keys and that 12 pak of Bud Lite? Please!!!???

ps ML I have been in and out of the GCC region for 20 some years.

Fun:
Clay Pidgeon (Skeet) shooting
Target Shooting (Olympic sport?)

Naughty:
"In Merseyside in recent months 28 telephone boxes and seven cars have been blown up using firework gunpowder."
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/3237225.stm

And least we forget:
"fireworks evidently developed out of military rockets and explosive" missiles
http://www.britannica.com/eb/article-9034345
firework -- Encyclopædia Britannica

Basically if I want to use alcohol, a cigar, guns, or fireworks for fun (but usually only any two out of four for safety reasons) that should be my right. If what I do interferes with others I should be treated as a menace to society

Belated Eid Mubarak, your lordship. I paid your blog a previous visit and I read this entry but due to some mystery I was unable to spot the Eid greeting.

Well, glad you enjoyed your halloween!

I agree with the banning of fireworks for sale to the general public. Unfortunatley this world is full of morons and our laws should be in place to protect us all.

I also think that animal cruelty laws should be tightened as it is well documented that those who abuse animals are far more likely to move on to hurt humans further down the line. I could go on about this but that's enough out of me for now!
